Along‐Orbit Analysis of GRACE Follow‐On Inter‐Satellite Laser Ranging Measurements for Sub‐Monthly Surface Mass Variations

چکیده

We examined the sensitivity of GRACE Follow-On (GRACE-FO) laser ranging interferometer (LRI) measurements to sub-monthly time-variable gravity (TVG) signals caused by transient, high-frequency mass changes in Earth system. GRACE-FO LRI provides complementary inter-satellite with higher precision over a wider range frequencies than baseline K-band microwave The common approach for studying variation relies on inverted TVG or mascon solutions period of, example, one month 10 days which are adversely affected temporal aliasing and/or smoothing. In this article, we present alternative along-orbit analysis methodology terms line-of-sight difference (LGD) fully exploit examination changes. discrepancy between “instantaneous” LGD observations and monthly-mean (from Level-2 data) at satellite altitude indicates gravitational variability not captured solutions. conjunction ocean altimetry observations, non-tidal atmosphere models, hydrology show that detect oceanic Argentine Basin Gulf Carpentaria, variations surface (river) water Amazon Basin. demonstrate benefits gained from repeat ground track data case flow. based time series presented here is especially suitable quantifying spatial evolution extreme, rapidly changing variations.

Intersatellite laser ranging instrument for the GRACE follow-on mission

The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) has demonstrated that low–low satellite-tosatellite tracking enables monitoring the time variations of the Earth’s gravity field on a global scale, in particular those caused by mass-transport within the hydrosphere. Due to the importance of long-term continued monitoring of the variations of the Earth’s gravitational field and the limited lif...

Laser beam steering for GRACE Follow-On intersatellite interferometry.

The GRACE Follow-On satellites will use, for the first time, a Laser Ranging Interferometer to measure intersatellite distance changes from which fluctuations in Earth's geoid can be inferred. We have investigated the beam steering method that is required to maintain the laser link between the satellites. Although developed for the specific needs of the GRACE Follow-On mission, the beam steerin...

GRACE measurements of mass variability in the Earth system.

Monthly gravity field estimates made by the twin Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites have a geoid height accuracy of 2 to 3 millimeters at a spatial resolution as small as 400 kilometers. The annual cycle in the geoid variations, up to 10 millimeters in some regions, peaked predominantly in the spring and fall seasons. Geoid variations observed over South America that can...

Wavelet analysis of GRACE K-band range rate measurements related to Urmia Basin

Space-borne gravity data from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), as well as some other in situ and remotely sensed satellite data have been used to determine water storage changes in Lake Urmia Basin (Iran). As usual, the GRACE products are derived from precise inter-satellite range rate measurements converted to different formats such as spherical harmonic coefficients and equiva...

Gravitational Acceleration of Spinning Bodies From Lunar Laser Ranging Measurements

The Sun’s 1/c order gravitational gradient accelerations of Earth and Moon, dependent on the motions of the latter bodies, act upon the system’s internal angular momentum. Not only does this gravitational spin-orbit force (which plays an important part in calculating gravity wave signal templates from astrophysical sources) slightly accelerate the Earth-Moon system as a whole, it more robustly ...
